Olivia Rodrigo Teases “Experimental” New Album Filled with “Sad Love Songs”

Olivia Rodrigo appears to be on the precipice of announcing a new album. Earlier this week, painted walls with her initials were spotted in cities worldwide, and now, details of the project have been revealed in a recent interview with British Vogue.

At the time of Rodrigo’s sitdown with writer Amel Mukhtar — which appears to have been conducted last fall — the pop star was “70% done” with recording the album, with two or three songs still to go. She played three tracks from the LP, explaining that it has “London vibes” due to her recording in the city and drawing from her experiences there. (Rodrigo is in a relationship with British actor Louis Partridge.)

Rodrigo admitted it was a “creative challenge” to write the album from a “joyful place,” but still managed to make “sad love songs” about the obsession and anxiety of romance. “I realized all my favorite romantic love songs were beautiful because they had a tinge of fear or yearning in them,” she explained.

Mukhtar described the first track as “smooth, trippy soft rock about the spirituality of finding the man of your dreams,” exploring concepts such as “kismet” and feminine intuition while singing in a more laidback and mature voice.

The dreamy and hazy second song, meanwhile, is meant to embody “withdrawal symptoms” when apart from one’s partner. It was inspired by Miranda and Steve’s relationship in Sex and the City — specifically by Rodrigo’s desire to also tell her partner “whenever something funny happens.”

Finally, the third track is about realizing that “love won’t fix you” and finds Rodrigo at her “most experimental,” with an orchestral ending, according to Mukhtar.

“You’re getting to the core of all of your issues: how you feel about yourself, your insecurities, what makes you joyful,” Rodrigo said about the song, which describes the feeling of being in love. “It feels like the most raw form of you, which is so scary and terrifying and uncomfortable, sometimes, but beautiful at times.”

As flagged by fan account Olivia Rodrigo Daily, promotion for the singer’s next album was spotted in Los Angeles, Berlin, Sydney, Paris, Bangkok, Warsaw, and Toronto earlier this week. In those cities, walls have been painted with Rodrigo’s initials against the same pink background as her official website.

Rodrigo’s most recent album, GUTS, was released in September 2023.
