Arkansas doom metal masters Pallbearer have announced a fully reconstructed edition of their landmark sophomore album, Foundations of Burden. The record, originally released in 2014, remains one of the band's most celebrated works — a towering statement in modern doom metal that blended crushing heaviness with soaring, melodic introspection.
In a statement marking the album's anniversary, Pallbearer shared: "Foundations of Burden was released on this day in 2014. Over the past year we've completely reconstructed the album from the original sessions, with remixed and remastered treatments of its six pieces that fully realize our original vision for this transformative part of our history.
"This refreshed release features entirely new artwork from artist Ben Vierling, imbuing the album with his own visionary interpretation of the record's iconography. More information and pre-orders for Foundations of Burden (2025 Redux) launch this Friday at 9am EST."
When Foundations of Burden was first released on August 19, 2014, through Profound Lore Records, it represented a major leap forward for Pallbearer. Building on the promise of their acclaimed 2012 debut Sorrow and Extinction, the album expanded their sonic scope, pushing doom metal beyond its traditional confines.
Where their debut was crushingly bleak, Foundations of Burden introduced more dynamic songwriting and layered atmospherics. The record showcased Brett Campbell's plaintive, soaring vocals set against colossal riffs and glacial tempos, while also weaving in progressive flourishes. Critics praised the album for its ability to blend emotional vulnerability with devastating heaviness, establishing Pallbearer as one of the most important doom bands of the 2010s.
Notably, Foundations of Burden earned widespread acclaim from outlets outside the metal press. Pitchfork, NPR, and Spin all lauded the album, helping it break doom metal into broader awareness. It even landed on numerous year-end lists, hailed as a genre-defining achievement.
