Paul McCartney has confirmed Ringo Starr will appear on his upcoming album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane.
As reported by Billboard, the collaboration was revealed during a listening session for the new album at producer Andrew Watt’s Los Angeles studio on Thursday, April 16th. During the intimate gathering, McCartney explained how Starr ended up playing drums and dueting with him on “Home to Us.”
“I saw Ringo and said I worked with this guy Andrew [Watt]. Ringo came over to Andrew’s studio and played a little bit of drums,” McCartney recalled.
Apparently, there was a misunderstanding between Starr and Watt that left Ringo “a bit pissed,” but McCartney turned Starr’s contribution into a song about growing up in Liverpool.
There were more misunderstandings when McCartney sent the demo to Starr, who initially only recorded vocals for the chorus. McCartney took this as meaning Starr didn’t like the song, but they were able to clear the air, and Starr returned to the studio to add more drums.
According to Billboard, “Home to Us” also features backing contributions from the Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde and Texas’ Sharleen Spiteri as Starr and McCartney trade vocals “line by line.”
In December 2024, Starr joined McCartney onstage in London, where they performed “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)” and “Helter Skelter.” The year before, they came together for the final Beatles song, “Now and Then,” and joined Dolly Parton on her version of “Let It Be.”
The Boys of Dungeon Lane finds McCartney revisiting his childhood in Liverpool and early adventures with George Harrison and John Lennon before their Beatles days. The album is set for release on May 29th, and pre-orders are ongoing.
Starr is gearing up to release a new album of his own, Long Long Road, on April 24th. He will support it with an upcoming spring tour, for which tickets can be purchased here.
