Pendulum Announce First New Album in 15 Years, Unleash Single “Save the Cat”: Stream

Reunited drum and bass act Pendulum have announced their first new full-length album in 15 years, Inertia, arriving August 22nd. The band also offered up the single “Save the Cat.”

Since reuniting, Pendulum have showcased a more metal-tinged drum and bass sound across EPs released in 2021 and 2023, and “Save the Cat” is another heavy, aggressive cut. Singer Rob Swire goes full screamo on the vocals, and Pendulum’s signature breakbeat assault is crushed and gnarled into an electro-industrial squall.

“It was written during a period of self-questioning and frustration,” Swire said of the single in a press release, which states that the song came “in the wake of two breakups — one that unraveled slowly over time, and another that hit without warning.”

Added Swire, “Love felt like something I didn’t fully trust myself with anymore.”

Swire co-produced Inertia alongside Owen Charles, with recording at Pendulum’s London Studio. The album’s 16-song tracklist compiles the eight songs from the aforementioned EPs, plus eight additional tracks. That includes previously released collaborative singles such as “Halo” (featuring Bullet for My Valentine), “Louder Than Words” (feat. Hybrid Minds), “Mercy Killing” (feat. Scarlxrd), and “Napalm” (feat. Joey Violence & Brae), plus new collabs with Wargasm (“Cannibal”) and AWOLNATION (“Guiding Lights”).

“I was basically testing how far we could push Pendulum,” Swire said of the band’s heavier new sound. “Seeing what we could get away with. I always looked at The Prodigy as the benchmark. They started out as pure rave — breakbeat, hardcore — but they evolved. They became their own sound. You don’t even really associate them with breakbeat anymore. They just are The Prodigy.”

He continued, “It’s the sound of Pendulum finding themselves again, and me figuring myself out to a certain extent. Breakups do that — they strip things down and show you who you are. I’m just trying not to become the guy who needs to go through one just to make a record.”

Pendulum have a handful of UK live dates this summer, including a massive gig at The National Bowl in Milton Keynes on August 9th, about two weeks before the album drops. Find tickets on viagogo.
