Fans had noticed similarities between “Paris” off Illenium’s latest album, ODYSSEY, and an edit of Porter Robinson’s 2014 track “Shepherdess.”
Porter Robinson has been added to the writer credits of “Paris” off Illenium‘s recent album, ODYSSEY, weeks after fans drew comparisons between it and the former artist’s 2014 track “Shepherdess.”
Specifically, commenters on platforms like Reddit and X have noted similarities between “Paris” and an edit of “Shepherdess” that Robinson played out live in his Worlds Live stage shows. Among other common themes, the two tracks utilize nearly identical synth arpeggios and string instrument melody intervals.
Robinson was not mentioned in any of the promotional rollout leading up to ODYSSEY‘s February 6 release. In a Zach Sang Show appearance uploaded on February 13, Illenium (real name Nicholas Miller) said that he came up with “Paris” while “feeling a cool vibe” on a train ride through France.
And although Miller didn’t mention Robinson at the time, a visit to the Spotify page for “Paris” reveals that he’s now credited as one of the song’s writers. EDM Identity has reached out to spokespeople on behalf of both artists for comment.
Even if they’re not deliberately plagiarizing content, artists can sometimes suffer from cryptomnesia. This well-documented phenomenon causes memories of others’ works can resurface in the mind as a seemingly new idea.
But creatives would be hard pressed to win a legal case with such a plea. The 2015 verdict in which Pharrell and Robin Thicke were found guilty of copyright infringement over similarities between their 2013 song “Blurred Lines” and the late Marvin Gaye’s 1977 hit “Got to Give It Up” showed that even a tenuous connection can become a liability.
Illenium is gearing up for a run of Las Vegas Sphere shows from March 5-7, 12-14, and April 2-4. Porter Robinson has remained relatively quiet thus far in 2026.
