Even after forty years, Public Enemy have not given up on fighting the power. Case in point: their new song “MARCH MADNESS” protests against gun violence and “crooked politicians who ain’t playing fair.” Stream it below.
Dropping yesterday in honor of Juneteenth, the track opens with what sounds like a 911 dispatch call being played on the news. Flavor Flav then sets the tone with a militaristic chant of “Right, Left, Left, Right, Left!” before calling out politicians who “don’t care” and thus won’t be “getting my vote.”
Chuck D’s verse directly criticizes the performative safety measures implemented in response to school shootings. “Grades 1 to 12, even kindergarten, needs security,” he spits. “Parents dropping off their children in fear/ Lawmakers acting scared off the NRA refusing to change year after year.”
All proceeds from the track are being donated to The Black Music Action Coalition Human Rights Fund and Everytown, a non-profit organization against gun violence.
In a statement, Flavor Flav said it was “an honor” to work with students from Harvard University, Berklee College, and Howard University to create a “protest anthem about important issues we are facing as human beings right now.”
He continued, “It’s horrible what’s going on right now around the world and especially here. I hate it. But I got a voice and a platform and we are still fighting the power and for positive change all these years later.”
Chuck D added, “Gun violence is not normal behavior, but it’s been going on for so long that it’s normalized. We need to treat it like the sickness and the epidemic that it is.”
