Public Enemy’s Chuck D and The Doors’ John Densmore Team Up as doPE

Public Enemy’s Chuck D and The Doors’ John Densmore have teamed up as the new project doPE. The pair’s debut album, no country for old men, will arrive on April 18th, while the single “every tick tick tick” has already been named the Record Store Day Song of the Year in advance of the release.

The rapper and the drummer first formed a bond during an encounter at a Record Store Day panel in 2014, with Chuck emailing Densmore a year later, and writing, “You’ve got the beats, I’ve got the rhymes, let’s make doPE.”

The name doPE, not to be confused with the industrial-metal band Dope, combines the first two letters of “Doors” and the initials of Public Enemy.

“John Densmore’s beat isn’t just rhythm, it’s history talking,” stated Chuck D in a press release. “He’s been scoring moments of our culture for decades, and that wisdom hits different when it meets the now. This collaboration is about locking generations together and pushing sound forward.”

Densmore added, “It’s been an honor working with Chuck D on this project. He’s got the rhymes & I’ve got the beats… & we made doPE!”

Regarding the selection of “every tick tick tick” as the Record Store Song of the Year,  RSD co-founder Michael Kurtz stated, “To me, the song ‘every tick tick tick’ captures that moment, as well as the times we’re living in. They both have an extensive history with record stores and with Record Store Day — Chuck served as RSD Ambassador and has celebrated by spending the day at various stores around the country. The Doors have released more titles for Record Store Day events than any other band.”

As of now, no music has been released. Fans can check their local record shop on April 18th (Record Store Day) to pick up the doPE album on limited-edition oxblood transparent vinyl.
