Ratboys Rip Through Deep Cuts and New Songs at New York City’s Nightclub 101 Underplay: Photos + Setlist

A day before playing the 1,000+ capacity Warsaw in Brooklyn as part of their scheduled tour, Ratboys put on a surprise pop-up underplay at Mahattan’s ~150-cap Nightclub 101.

Only recently revitalized, Nightclub 101 has a storied history; as frontwoman Julia Steiner pointed out more than once, the venue was where the Red Hot “Chili Peps” played their first-ever NYC show. Ratboys playing their on a Wednesday night (March 4th) was thus as much a treat for the indie favorites as it was for their fans, who packed the room from wall to wall. Announced just three days prior, the show was a sell-out that felt like a sell-out with how packed the bar area was before doors formally opened.

Once they did and everyone respectfully filed in, Ratboys ripped into much of their fantastic new album, Singin’ to an Empty Chair. Highlights included the opening trio of “Anywhere,” “Penny in the Lake,” and “Know You Then,” as well as “The World, So Madly” and “Light Night Mountains All That” (see video of the latter below). Prior to “Burn It Down,” Steiner spoke out in opposition to the actions of ICE (whose boss was fired less than 24 hours later — coincidence?), with “Fuck ICE” actually written on the setlist and the crowd applauding the condemnation.

The setlist also featured a number of older and deeper cuts, including “Elvis Is in the Freezer” and “Molly” from the nearly-10-year-old GN. Steiner noted this was their first tour being able to bring a pedal steel player with them, which meant this was one of the few time songs like these have been heard live in their fullest glory.

To close the set, Ratboys pulled out a duo of Printer’s Devil cuts they hadn’t played in some time: “Alien with a Sleep Mask On” and “Look To.” You can see if they continue digging deep into their catalog by picking up tickets to the rest of their upcoming tour dates here.
