RUSH played night two of their four-night residency in the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California, on Tuesday night as part of their “Fifty Something” reunion tour.
During the show, the band changed up the setlist significantly compared to Sunday’s kickoff show, including the entirety of their seven-part “2112” suite for the first time in 29 years.
RUSH’s performance of the groundbreaking 20-minute suite was immaculate, performed with vigor and energy that betrays the fact that Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee are now in their 70s. RUSH had only ever played the full suite live on one previous tour, that being their 1997 Test for Echo shows. On the tour for 2112, the band omitted the fifth movement of the seven, with later tours further truncating it by removing the sixth and eventually the third and fourth as well, leaving the often-played tour version consisting of “Overture,” “The Temples of Syrinx,” and “Grand Finale.” If opening each night with a challenging prog piece like “Xanadu” was a testament to the band pulling out the stops for this tour, then “2112” in its entirety only further underscores that fact.
Other songs played on night two that weren’t performed on night one include “The Analog Kid,” “Leave That Thing Alone,” “The Trees,” “Headlong Flight,” “Animate,” “Closer to the Heart,” “A Passage to Bangkok,” “Anthem,” and “Finding My Way.”
Additionally, Aimee Mann once again joined RUSH onstage to perform “Time Stand Still,” making that the second time it has ever occurred alongside night one of this tour, and only the third time a guest performer from a studio track appeared live onstage with the band to play their part, the only other time being Ben Mink’s appearance on the final date of the R40 then-farewell tour to play “Losing It” with RUSH. The sum total was a night every part the equal to their superb tour debut two nights earlier.
Lee had previously said that RUSH prepped 38 different songs for this tour, and after nights 1 and 2, they’ve almost played them all. RUSH’s third night at the Kia Forum will be on Thursday, June 11th, with the final night on Saturday, June 13th.
The four-night stand at the Kia Forum kicks off the band’s “Fifty Something” reunion tour featuring Anika Nilles on drums and Loren Gold on keyboards. The North American run, which features multi-night residencies in each city, extends all the way through December (pick up tickets here).
