RZA Gives GZA His Flowers: “No Other MC Can Compare”

RZA is giving GZA his props. During a recent appearance on Drink Champs, when asked by NORE to compare Nas to GZA, the Wu-Tang leader shared that his bandmate is his favorite emcee.

“For MC-ing, my favorite, best MC is the GZA,” RZA says. “I don’t think no MC could beat the GZA. I think what GZA has written for hip-hop, no other MC can compare.”

The origins of Wu-Tang Clan began with RZA, GZA and the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard, who were cousins, linked up. GZA was eventually signed to Cold Chillin’ Records as a solo artist known as “The Genius,” before re-linking with RZA to form Wu-Tang Clan in 1992.

When praising his compatriot, RZA compared “The Genius” to other iconic rappers.

“Even if you go look at Rakim, who is one of the greatest, to most people, one of the greatest,” he explained. “Nas is one of the greatest. If you go look at what GZA offered to hip hop, look at what he spawned. He spawned me, Meth, Rae, Ghost — these are all from GZA, the enlightener.”

Wu-Tang Clan is currently on the road for what is being billed as the legendary nine-man crew’s farewell tour. Dubbed Wu-Tang Forever: The Final Chamber, the trek began June 6 in Baltimore and ends July 18 in Philadelphia. The group is on the road with Run the Jewels.

In an interview with Popcast earlier this year, RZA shared how he had already planned for this tour well before it happened.

“It all was part of a plan,” he said. “In the beginning, there was a five-year plan. This time, there was two five-year plans. You have to start the first plan — the documentary to get to the series — and then that’s going to build up to the first tour, New York State of Mind, with Nas. That’s going to build up to the residency — a test run, at first — and that’s going to lead to a final tour.”
