South London singer-songwriter Skye Newman went viral with her debut single “Hairdresser” released last March, and went on to drop her first project SE9 Part 1 in October, the same month that she made her first-ever appearance on Radio 1 Live Lounge. She has also performed alongside Ed Sheeran, and supported Lewis Capaldi on tour last September. Newman was selected based on input from panel of over 170 industry experts, including Elton John, Dua Lipa, JADE, Olivia Dean, YUNGBLUD, and Sam Smith.
Speaking of the win, Newman says: “I’m still in shock that I’ve won Radio 1’s Sound of 2026! So many artists that I’ve listened to over the years have been honoured with the award and now me! To think that Sound Of started the year I was born, 2003 and now I’m a winner! I’m so grateful and wouldn’t be where I am without my people and the BBC supporting me on my journey. Thank you!”
The top five acts for Sound of 2026, named in order, are: Skye Newman, Jim Legxacy, sombr, Geese, and Royel Otis. The longlist includes Allesi Rose, Chloe Qisha, Florence Road, kwn, and Sasha Keable. This marks the 23rd year of BBC Radio 1’s Sound Of.
Newman’s Radio 1’s Sound of Live performance will be available to watch on Radio 1’s iPlayer channel.
