Suki Waterhouse has always seemed to exist between worlds — model and musician, actor and songwriter, London and Los Angeles — but her third album, Loveland, may be the first time she’s fully embraced the uncertainty. Speaking with Kyle Meredith about the new record, Waterhouse discusses becoming a mother, collaborating with Aaron Dessner, and making an album during what she calls the space between who she was and who she’s becoming. The result is a collection of songs that drift between dream-pop, folk, country noir, and hazy lounge music, all while documenting a life in motion. Listen above or wherever you get your podcasts.

“I had this weird feeling at the beginning of making this record where I was just like, ‘I’m not her anymore,’” Waterhouse says of writing the album shortly after becoming a mother. “I still am her and I haven’t changed, but I felt like this shell of a human.” Recording sessions with Aaron Dessner at Long Pond eventually helped pull her back toward herself, with songs like “Seasons” capturing that fragile transition in real time. Waterhouse even fought to preserve the original demo vocal on the track, explaining, “There’s just something in it that was bottled.” By the time she wrote the album’s late-arriving single “Back in Love,” she says she had “completely come around” and rediscovered the energy that had briefly gone missing.

Elsewhere, Loveland travels through memories of London, life on tour with a newborn, and the complicated reality of dreams realized. The woozy “When I Get Drunk” leans into jazz textures and late-night sensuality, while “Notting Hill” becomes both a love letter to home and a meditation on impermanence. “A lot of my dreams have come true,” Waterhouse reflects near the end of the conversation. “And then you also have to deal with your dreams coming true.” As she prepares to bring the album to the stage, balancing touring, acting, and family life, Loveland ultimately lands as an album about accepting change while trying to hold onto the places and people that made you who you are.
