These days, The Beach Boys are more likely to beef over funeral remarks than ever write or perform together. So, for a reminder of the truly good ol’ days when they were a bona fide pop music machine, the Boys have announced the release of yet another archival release with We Gotta Groove: The Brother Studio Years.
Due out February 13th via Capitol/UME, We Gotta Groove spans six discs (three LPs and three CDs) and collects for the very first time The Beach Boys’ 1976-1977 recordings at Santa Monica’s Brother Studio. The release features a newly remastered edition of 1977’s The Beach Boys Love You, the long-awaited release of the perpetually-shelved Adult/Child, and alternates and outtakes from the 1976 sessions for 15 Big Ones. In all, there are 73 tracks, including 35 unreleased cuts.
According to a press release, the songs here (produced by veteran engineer James Sáez and longtime Beach Boys historian Howie Edelson) are said to have “powered the era’s ‘Brian’s Back!’ campaign — launched to re-balance the band’s commercial fortunes — which presented Brian [Wilson] as returning to full creative command.” Part of this history is covered in the set’s 40-page liner notes, with insights from The Beach Boys and the Brother Studio engineering team of Stephen Moffitt, Earle Mankey, and John Hanlon.
The release goes on to describe the significance of this “era,” as the band was contending with the “unexpected success of two back-to-back Top 10 greatest hits albums.” That sharp uptick in attention then pushed The Beach Boys toward their “early surf-and-cars past, fueling hits-laden nostalgia tours at sold-out stadiums and arenas across the U.S.” The resulting songs, however, represent “a body of work far more complex than the era’s public narrative suggested.”
As a sneak peek of the set, The Beach Boys have unveiled “We Gotta Groove,” a Love You outtake that was written and co-produced by Wilson in 1976. Featuring Mike Love on lead vocals, and a guest appearance by guitarist Billy Hinsche, the song captures the sonic magic that the band was capable of when they came together like some pop music Voltron. Check it out below.
This release follows two other recent-ish archival offerings. Those are 2021’s Feel Flows (which centered on 1970’s Sunflower and 1971’s Surf’s Up) and 2022’s Sail On Sailor (featuring reissues of 1972’s Carl and the Passions – “So Tough” and 1973’s Holland).
Pre-orders for We Gotta Groove are available now. If you’d like to experience more than just the music, Los Angeles’ Grammy Museum is hosting a special event on Thursday, February 12th, with Edelson and Sáez in conversation with Moffitt, Earle Mankey, and John Hanlon to discuss the songs and their recording process for the first time. Check out event details here.
