The Cure won their first two Grammy Awards ever on Sunday, earning the honors for Best Alternative Performance (“Alone”) and Best Alternative Album (Songs of a Lost World).
Sadly, Robert Smith and company couldn’t attend the ceremony as they were attending the funeral of their longtime guitarist-keyboardist Perry Bamonte. who passed away 0ver Christmas. Smith did provide an acceptance speech, which was read by presenter Jesse Welles, thanking all the Cure fans by saying, “without you none of this would be possible.
Despite a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame career, the Cure had never won a Grammy before today. They were previously nominated in 1993 and 2001, but walked away empty-handed.
