Mike Davis’ (Chris Hemsworth) plan to intercept an illegal jewel exchange and steal them from Sharon Colvin’s (Halle Berry) wealthy client Steven Munroe (Tate Donovan) becomes a chaotic collision at the film’s climax. Unbeknownst to Mike, detective Lou Lubesnick (Mark Ruffalo) has intercepted the briefcase with the jewels and took on the role of ‘Foster’, who was set to deliver them to Steven.

Lou is aware that Mike, who is pretending to be Foster’s bodyguard, is planning to steal the jewels for himself and Sharon – but he’s waiting for him to commit the act so he can arrest him. This leads to a tense car exchange, as they drive to the hotel where Steven is staying to complete the deal.

After they enter the hotel room, Mike reveals himself to be a thief and sets his plan in motion to steal the jewels and stacks of cash from his safe. However, things go awry when Lou reveals himself to be a detective – with both of them locked in a standoff.

At this point, violent biker Ormon (Barry Keoghan), who is also hoping to steal the jewels under orders from Money (Nick Nolte), bursts through the door and holds Mike at gunpoint. As chaos brews between them, Mike manages to shoot and kill Ormon, breaking Mike’s non-violent streak in the process.

At the end of the scene, Lou tells Mike to leave Los Angeles, stating that he’ll pin the robbery, along with his past crimes, on the deceased Ormon.

After the final confrontation, we discover Lou has actually taken the jewels from the crime scene. He gives them to Sharon, so she can start a new life after quitting her job at the insurance firm, and as a gift for helping him track down Mike.

Sharon passes along a cryptic message to Lou from Mike, which leads him to a covered vehicle inside a car park. When he pulls back the cover, he finds Mike’s mustang, the car – as mentioned in their taxi exchange – Lou has always wanted since he was a child. From Mike’s viewpoint, it appears to be a parting gift to thank Lou for not arresting him.

In Mike’s final scene, we see him following Lou’s orders and driving away from Los Angeles, but he has a change of heart and turns around.

We later see his ex-girlfriend Maya (Monica Barbaro) being handed a photo at her office through the post. The picture shows a young Mike and his siblings, with a message on the back signalling that he wants another chance with her. This comes after he was previously reluctant to share anything personal about himself, including details around his family.

In the last scene, we see Maya running out of her office presumably to find Mike. While we never see them together at the end, the assumption is that they reunite off-screen.
