Fresh off the release of the Eyeball EP in January, They Might Be Giants have now announced their new album, The World Is to Dig, and released its lead single, “Wu-Tang.”

Out on April 14th, The World Is to Dig marks the band’s first full-length album in five years, following their Grammy-nominated LP, BOOK, that came out in 2021. The World Is to Dig will feature 18 new tracks. An exclusive 180-gram vinyl color variant of the LP will be available at indie retail shops on April 17th.

“Wu-Tang” is the first glimpse of what fans can expect, and if its sweetly nostalgic, 60s-esque sound is anything to go by, The World Is to Dig will be a romp through the past. Stream the new track and see the artwork below.

“Many years ago, we discussed the idea of celebrating an artist or a style of music, but in the form of a completely unrelated genre of music,” says They Might Be Giants’ John Linnell in a statement. “The original idea was a Tin Pan Alley-style song extolling the greatness of heavy metal. ‘Wu-Tang’ was written more or less along those lines, partly inspired by their TV biopic, but void of any musical reference to the great hip-hop collective. Are we fans? Sure! Would we ever attempt to emulate their sound? Not publicly.”

Last month, They Might Be Giants released the Eyeball EP, which they referred to as a “warm-up round” for the (then) yet-to-be-revealed studio album. The project featured the songs “Eyeball,” “The Glamour of Rock,” “Peggy Guggenheim,” and a remix of the title track by The Elegant Too.

To support the release, They Might Be Giants have announced the latest leg of their “The Bigger Show Tour,” which is happening this spring. Kicking off on April 17th with a two-night stand in Woodstock, New York, the trek will feature multi-night stops in Brooklyn, Chicago, Boston, Detroit, Philadelphia, and Indianapolis.
