Tiga Offers Refreshing Soundscapes on ‘HOTLIFE’

Tiga’s first album in a decade, HOTLIFE, showcases a wide range of auditory delights from funky blog house to synth-driven rides into the night.

Tiga‘s legacy in the electronic music scene precedes itself. From releasing hit tracks “Sunglasses at Night” and “Mind Dimension” and remixing artists like Justice and The xx to being the creative force behind Turbo Recordings and helping pioneer the scene in Montreal in the ’90s, he’s left no stone unturned during his career. While he released multiple albums during this time, it had been a decade since his last was unveiled. That’s now changed as Tiga has finally returned to the format with the release of his latest album, HOTLIFE.

HOTLIFE arrives in the wake of a chapter where Tiga faced creative struggles head-on. “There was a period of time, not so long ago, where I couldn’t do anything. Couldn’t make music, couldn’t make jokes, couldn’t function at all,” he said on Instagram. “I have many people to thank for helping me come back to life, and this album in many ways is the soundtrack to this return, so the people that I have to thank- not only helped me make this album, but helped me rebuild my life and my mind.”

As the self-described “soundtrack to this return,” HOTLIFE, which is out days after Tiga took the stage at Coachella’s Quasar stage, accomplishes many things. Its 12-track, 60-minute runtime is jampacked with unique soundscapes that showcase Tiga’s dynamic range and ability to cultivate dancefloor vibes.

Diving into the tracklist reveals collaborations with artists like Boys Noize. The German artist teamed up with Tiga on “HOT WIFE,” a gritty, off-the-wall tune that thuds forward, incorporating repeated vocal layers and added flourishes. It’s weird, funky, and reminiscent of the blog house era, a theme that continues to appear throughout on tracks like “IAMWHATIAM” with MRD, “NEED YOU TONIGHT,” “LOLLIPOP,” and “SEXLESS PORNOGRAPHIC LOSERS” with Maara.

As you find your groove on HOTLIFE, you’ll quickly become immersed in soundscapes that lean a bit more into the house or dance-pop side of the spectrum. “SILK SCARF” with Fcukers still retains a sense of weirdness to it, but you can quickly imagine this getting spun at Club Space at 5am. “I AM YOUR DETROIT SUNRISE” hits you straight in the chest with its kicks yet retains its minimal nature for a more chilled-out atmosphere.

CHERRY” leads listeners a bit deeper, taking them on a mind-melting ride that’s a proper fit for a warehouse environment with its distorted vocals and acid tones. Meanwhile, the album’s closing track, “ECSTASY SURROUNDS ME,” feels like it was ripped straight out of the ’80s with its hypnotic synth melodies and vocals guiding you to the finish line. It’s the perfect cherry on top, making this album sublime.
