Tom Holland thought Christopher Nolan hated his performance in ‘The Odyssey’ at first

Tom Holland has revealed how a misunderstanding on the set of The Odyssey made him think Christopher Nolan hated his performance.

The Oscar-winning director’s follow-up to Oppenheimer is an adaptation of the epic poem by Greek writer Homer, and stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, a king making the perilous voyage home after a long war.

Among the ensemble cast is Holland, who plays Odysseus’ son, Telemachus. While he was excited for the opportunity, he told Fandango that working with large IMAX film cameras led him to mistakenly believe Nolan didn’t like his performance.

“Working with the IMAX cameras for the first time is an experience,” Holland explained. “It is unlike anything I have ever seen before, and I didn’t know that it only ran for three minutes. So, I remember you would continue cutting, and I was with Jon [Bernthal], like, ‘Why does he keep cutting? Why does he keep doing that?’”

He continued: “And in my head, I was like, ‘Does he not like what we’re doing? What is happening?’ And then, I remember it was actually [stunt coordinator] George Cottle that was like, ‘No, no, no, there’s only three minutes in the mag.’ I was like, ‘Oh, thank God.’ I thought I was totally shitting the bed in this scene.”

“Mag” refers to the chamber in a camera that holds the reel of film for shooting, with Nolan preferring to shoot on film as opposed to the more common practice of digital cameras.

The Odyssey arrives in cinemas on July 17. Unlike many big-budget releases, it was recently revealed that the film will forgo influencer screenings and instead focus on film critics. As for Holland, he recently named who he would like to take over the role of Spider-Man once he leaves the Marvel franchise.
