Top Gun: Maverick remains the highest-grossing movie of Cruise’s career with $1.5 billion at the global box office. It marked his return 36 years after the original and was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
In June 2025, Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski teased that Top Gun 3 will be Cruise’s “last ride” as Maverick, and will revolve around an “existential crisis” for the veteran pilot. “It’s an existential question that Maverick has to deal with, that would make Maverick feel small,” he explained.
