War on Women have officially announced their fifth album, Time Under Tension, out May 8th via Smartpunk Records,  while also unleashing the single “Messages Unsent.”

The album news comes after the Baltimore band announced a March US tour with Oceanator. The jaunt kicks off on March 18th in Pittsburgh, and you can get tickets here.

The single “Messages Unsent” brings the garage-y punk for which the band is known, but the lyrics eschew WoW’s typical political sentiments in favor of what vocalist Shawna Potter called “the first love song I’ve written in a long time, and certainly the first in this band.”

“It’s about the idea that once you really have something to lose, a partner or a life you love (or in this case, my dog Rosie), then you start to care more about your own safety, about sticking around,” she said in a press release. “You start thinking about your mortality, and theirs, and it’s terrifying. But even if we don’t get forever, I like the idea that love can live on.”

The accompanying video is equally heartfelt, compiling a behind-the-scenes tour diary from footage of War on Women’s first post-2020 trek.

“The joy of gathering against such a tragic backdrop mimics the song’s themes of love and loss,” Potter added.
