Bad Bunny returned to the Super Bowl Halftime Show stage for his second time (after appearing as a guest during Shakira and Jennifer Lopez’s 2020 Halftime Show) but first as a headliner, and his performance was colorful, powerful, and eventful. It was an ode to Puerto Rico and Puerto Rican culture, with fields of sugarcane, men playing dominoes, a piragua stand, a giant coqui on screen, and more. It also had surprise guest appearances from Lady Gaga doing a salsa version of “Die With A Smile” and veteran Puerto Rican superstar Ricky Martin singing “Lo Que Le Pasó a Hawaii,” as well as cameos from Cardi B, Karol G, Young Miko, Pedro Pascal, Jessica Alba, Toñita who owns the iconic Puerto Rican social club in Brooklyn, and more. Part of the show was staged as a wedding, and Bad Bunny presented one of his Grammy awards to a young boy that many people on social media are saying was a reference to Liam Ramos, the five-year-old who was detained by ICE last month.

The show ended with Bad Bunny saying “God Bless America” and naming all the countries in America, with “the only thing more powerful than hate is love” on the screen behind him. He then displayed a football with the words “together we are America” before spiking the ball.

Bad Bunny previously said he would refrain from playing concerts in the United States because “ICE could be outside [my concert],” and last week he spoke out against ICE during his Grammy acceptance speeches, saying, “We’re not savage, we’re not animals, we are humans, and we are Americans…The only thing more powerful than hate is love.”
