Since winning America's first gold medal in the Winter Olympics' women's free skating event since 2002, Alysa Liu has been at the center of attention. It's not just her skill that's been the topic of discussion, but also her music taste. After skating to PinkPantheress and being thanked by the pop singer herself, the ice skater has been asked about what else she wants to skate to. Last week she mentioned "Fire In My Heart," which led to a funny moment on TODAY.
When Liu visited the morning show yesterday, the hosts surprised her by playing some Simple Plan. “Did you mention, Simple Plan’s ‘Fire In My Heart’?” Craig Melvin asked Carson Daly as the 2013 pop-punk anthem started to play. “Is that your earworm?” Hoda Kotb asked the Olympian. It was not. Liu couldn’t remember the artist behind her “Fire In My Heart,” but figured it out before talking up the track again on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live later that day.
The "Fire In My Heart" at hand is an obscure 1984 single by the UK new wave/synth-pop group Escape From New York (fka Aistrip One). The band never released an album, just a couple of singles, but their music was reissued by Isle Of Jura in 2016 and "Fire In My Heart" inexplicably became popular on TikTok in the last few months. It's no surprise — old new wave hits are always going viral on TikTok (Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls," Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy," and many others).
Talking to Andy Cohen on WWHL, Liu said she’d also like to skate to Billie Eilish's "Chihiro," Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake," Mitski's "Star," and PinkPantheress' "Capable Of Love."
