Laughter In Summer will be Glenn's first release since his 2023 album The Ones Ahead and comes ahead of what's expected to be his final tour. Copeland revealed he was living with dementia last September.
The songs that comprise Laughter In Summer were recorded with Howard Bilerman over three days at Hotel2Tango, with the original plan being to record the songs they'd been singing on tour with a choir of singers from Montreal on the tracks. Elizabeth and music director, Alex Samaras are credited as producers for the record.
During the months after his diagnosis, Copeland began composing a series of instrumentals called with the intention of listeners being able to write their own lyrics to the arrangements. The album' title was inspired by a moment in which he played one of the new compositions for his wife Elizabeth, to which she responded, "laughter in summer, how I remember." Reflecting on that time, Elizabeth says: “It was a very painful time, because I was so aware of just how much of my sweetheart I was losing.”
Speaking on the lead double single "Children's Anthem / Let Us Dance (Movement One)", the couple explain: “'Let Us Dance' holds deep personal meaning for us... and it's one of our most favourite songs to perform together. It's a gentle reminder that life invites us to embody joy through movement, no matter the circumstances, no matter how difficult the path. Originally published on Keyboard Fantasies, this choral rework features a newly minted Montreal choir that we met mere moments before recording 'Movement One'. It's raw and honest – much the way we live our lives now.”
“'Children’s Anthem' was one of our very first creative collaborations as a couple, originally written in 2007 for an anti-bullying conference. We're bringing it back on this new album with a fresh arrangement dedicated to our precious granddaughter Freya. We hope it will serve as a rally cry to support and protect all the children of the world. At a time when violence has become endemic, this song and its message is more critical than ever."
Ahead of the record, Glenn and Elizabeth are continuing their tour through the UK/EU and Canada with dates in Edinburgh (2 October), Dublin (7 October), Cardiff (10 October), London (15 October) and Manchester (19 October)
