Billy Morrison, longtime rhythm guitarist for Billy Idol and former bassist for The Cult, has released a new song called “Becoming.” It features Sully Erna of Godsmack on vocals and Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme on lead guitar, with all three artists contributing to the writing process.
The song is the lead single from Morrison’s upcoming album Hollow, set to be released this summer. The LP is a follow-up to his guest-heavy 2024 album, The Morrison Project.
Morrison stated, “When the music to ‘Becoming’ was finally finished, in my mind there was only one person I could imagine singing it, and that was Sully Erna. His work with Godsmack over the decades has just proven his voice to be one of the most powerful in rock music.”
He continued, “When we were all at the Above Ground [benefit] show late last year here in LA, it seemed only fitting for me to ask Nuno to play lead (keeping it Boston on this track!). And again, he graciously agreed, and absolutely killed it.”
The song is a catchy hard rock song, leaning on atmospheric guitar-work and a 6/8 groove that wouldn’t have been out of place on a later-day Rush record. Bettencourt’s lead work is restrained, highlighting the song rather than overpowering it, while Erna is given free rein over the material to belt with his trademark powerful voice. It’s a strong opening offering from the upcoming record.
Erna remarked, “I really enjoyed working with Billy and Nuno on this track. It’s always a bit challenging when you have three creative people that work at such high levels of production to get to the finish line, but in the end the product always speaks for itself. And this song is strong! It’s a perfect example of not settling for anything less.”
Bettencourt added, “When you’re asked to collaborate on a song with incredible artists like Sully Erna and Billy Morrison, you’d have to say ‘yes’ before even hearing the song.”
Hollow is an all-star showcase just like its predecessor. This time around, Morrison is joined by landmark musical stars like Dexter Holland, Chuck D., B Real, Duff McKagan, Steve Stevens, and more.
Meanwhile, fans can catch Erna in concert when Godsmack embark on a North American tour beginning in May (pick up tickets here). The outing features support from Stone Temple Pilots and Dorothy.
