If you love EDM, outdoor fests, and consensual public sex, we have some bad news: The Orgy Dome at Burning Man has been destroyed. We’ll give you a few minutes to gather your thoughts.
In an post via Instagram (via TMZ), the group behind the Orgy Dome noted that its build team had “worked so hard this past week to *erect* our lovely space. Unfortunately, the winds yesterday undid all that labor and wrecked our structure. We are still here and thankfully safe.” (There’s a joke in there about “blowing winds” and “hard” but maybe now isn’t the best time for such frivolity.) A subsequent Instagram post noted that “what remains of the dome is beyond repair.”
The Orgy Dome isn’t just some huge tent where legal, consenting adults (with their state-issued IDs, of course) can come together in what some scientists call a “bang pile.” Rather, since its inception in 2003, the Orgy Dome has also promoted sex positivity and general sex education, with a focus on gender-based inclusion, from the campsite that also houses Aphrodite’s Garden. Organizers said they “hope to gift the playa some workshops and will keep you [updated].” Guess there really is no keeping good-hearted perverts down for very long.
Orgy Dome wasn’t the only installation that sustained damage. As Billboard noted, another casualty was “Black Cloud,” a 50-foot installation by a Ukrainian art team meant to both honor that country’s war efforts while warning of the real prospects of World War III.
Still, as far as bad news for Burning Man goes, the Orgy Dome’s closure is about as irksome as someone keeping their shoes on during group sex. In 2024, a woman died on the first day of the celebration out of Black Rock City. A year earlier, in 2023, the promoters made headlines when they refused National Guard assistance during extreme rain and muddy conditions. And both the 2021 and 2020 editions were canceled due to COVID restrictions. Still, if your visit to the Orgy Dome was already set to include some kind of masochism/sadism, this seems like a great development for you folks!
