Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt has launched his own guitar brand, Nuno Guitars, ending his longtime partnership with Washburn.
The news comes after Bettencourt was spotted playing a mysterious custom guitar during his appearance at the “Back to the Beginning” final Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne concert. Although the axe looked similar to his signature Washburn N4 model, it bore a never-before-seen “Nuno” logo on the headstock, leading fans to speculate that the guitar virtuoso had launched his own brand.
That was indeed the case, with Bettencourt formally announcing Nuno Guitars on Tuesday along with two flagship models: the Dark Horse and White Stallion, the former being the guitar played by Nuno at the Back to the Beginning show.
Those two flagship models are joined by Bettencourt’s own N4, his longstanding signature design for Washburn, which he appears to be carrying over from his former sponsorship. The guitarist confirmed the end of his longtime partnership with the brand via a press release, as reported by Guitar World.
A statement on the Nuno Guitars website reads: “My new models, the DARK HORSE and the WHITE STALLION, lead the launch of Nuno Guitars along with continuing the legacy of the N4. These are true workhorses built with the same passion I’ve put into every note I’ve ever played. What I’m most excited about as the FOUNDER and CEO of my new company is communicating directly with players and fans who will get to play the exact guitars that I play on stage and in the studio. Together we’re forming a new community where I can personally engage with you about a mutual passion… OUR guitars. Once you own a Nuno guitar, you are forever a part of my family. LET’S RIDE!”
