The City Is Coming to Erase It All is a follow-up to Fink's 2024 album Beauty In Your Wake, drawing inspiration from singer-guitarist Fin Greenall's home of Cornwall. "Memorise Your Senses" arrives as a seven-minute introduction to the album, alongside a music video featuring footage of Greenall in the seaside county.
Speaking about the track, singer-guitarist Fin Greenall explains: "’Memorise Your Senses’ comes from that moment when you're somewhere close to you, somewhere you feel deeply grounded, and you take it all in - knowing that you will have to leave to return to your busy, urban life. It's a song to me about the mask as well - the mask you wear to survive your own inner journeys, the pressures you carry, work, addiction, and how you can hide them from those you love. I think it's also about anger and resentment - towards yourself and the life you have built, about the greed and insatiable appetite of "career" and how that can carry you down paths you didn't expect."
He continues: “Often, we get to unpack these things whilst we're travelling - and in the case of ‘Memorise Your Senses’ - driving. In Cornwall, pretty much everything is done by car - lots of little lanes steeped with thousands of years of history and landscape that blurs as you speed by which has borne witness to so many things, and at the same time changes hardly at all. This song was definitely a product of the environment it was written and recorded in.”
Recorded in the Cornish village of Zennor, the process of making The City Is Coming to Erase It All saw Greenall immersing himself in the culture of the southwest, referencing artists such as Michael Chapman, namely his 1970 album Fully Qualified Survivor, and reading The Plumed Serpent by author and Zennor resident D. H. Lawrence. He was also inspired by indie folk contemporaries who have rejected city life in favour of isolation, such as Adrianne Lenker and Lorma. “I’m not looking for retro photocopies, because I’ve got Michael Chapman albums, Joni Mitchell albums. I want something new, but it has the vibe or the ethos," Greenall notes.
