Gina Birch, post-punk legend and co-founder of the Raincoats, has announced a new solo album, Trouble, out July 11th via Third Man Records. As a preview, Birch also shared the lead single, “Causing Trouble Again,” accompanied by a music video featuring a collective of female artists.
Trouble is Birch’s follow-up to her 2023 solo debut album, I Play My Bass Loud. The new project features 11 songs “fusing post-punk, dub, experimental rock, and more,” according to a press release. The LP was produced by Killing Joke’s Youth and engineered/mixed by Michael Rendall, both of whom worked on I Play My Bass Loud.
“The record title refers to all the mini revolutions that have occurred in my life, not following the usual paths, falling down holes, making the same mistakes over and over, trouble of being a young woman at a time our options were generally secretary, mother or sex worker,” Birch said in a statement. “Trouble I’ve caused and trouble I’m in…”
The lead single off Trouble, “Causing Trouble Again,” is a six-minute ode to female icons. It was inspired by the feminist art exhibition “Women in Revolt!,” which was displayed in the Tate Britain museum last year and featured Birch’s short film 3-Minute Scream. The track features musician Cosey Fanni Tutti and writer/painter Caroline Coon, both of whom are heard saying the names of women who inspired them.
The music video was inspired by Bob Dylan’s references to Jacob’s Ladder in “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” and stars a group of female artists across disciplines, including Birch’s Raincoats co-founder Ana De Silva. Watch the video below.
Birch will perform songs from the album live this fall when she supports Miki Berenyi Trio on the North American leg of their tour. She will be accompanied by Marie Merlet and Jenny Green, who are featured on Trouble and have co-writing credits on several tracks. See the full list of tour dates below, and get tickets here.
