Hans Zimmer Rips Golden Globes for Not Airing Winner of Best Original Score

Famed composer Hans Zimmer lashed out against Golden Globes organizers for not airing the winner of the Original Score category during its television broadcast.

Zimmer, who was nominated for F1: The Movie, shared his thoughts with Variety, adding that it’s “a shame not to honor those people — my friends — who work so hard to become a voice.” While this year’s prize went to Ludwig Göransson for Sinners, Zimmer has been nominated 17 times before, and won in 2001 for Gladiator, again 2004 for The Lion King (a soundtrack re-release), and most recently in 2022 for Dune.

To Zimmer, failing to acknowledge the category devalues the very real, and largely invisible, sacrifices of these artists.

“As a person who has been making films forever, everybody who works on a film works their utmost, doesn’t get any sleep, there are no weekends,” Zimmer said. He continued, “Sometimes my children wonder who I am — I come into the house and they call the police.”

“I think the work should always be acknowledged. This year is a fantastic year for composers — don’t ignore them, you don’t have a movie without them,” Zimmer added.

Of course, Zimmer did recognize that there’s at least one upside to this perceived snub: “It means I don’t have to make an insane speech and embarrass humanity as we know it.”

On the one hand, awards show broadcasts are run like both a naval warship and a clown car, so you can expect assorted goofs and mistakes. However, the Golden Globes are the start of awards season for TV and film, so you can see why Zimmer might be so upset. And, not to get all tinfoil hat on y’all, but with Hollywood clearly having a preference for One Battle After Another and Marty Supreme, it’s irksome that a Sinners-related win got the snub.

Still, Zimmer and F1 could have a shot at awards show gold when the Academy Award nominations are announced on Thursday, January 22nd. In the meantime, enjoy some of Zimmer’s F1 soundtrack below.
