Back in December, we learned the Dallas psychedelic soul singer/rapper/producer Liv.e was teaming up with veteran jazz drummer and hip-hop producer Karriem Riggins for an album under the name GENA. It's an acyonym standing for God Energy, Naturally Amazing and also a reference to Gina from Martin, all of which should help you triangulate where this duo is coming from.
The LP is called The Pleasure Is Yours, and it's out today. The title holds true; Liv.e and Riggins have developed a lush, woozy world of sound that feels like time-traveling from the '70s to the Y2K neo-soul era to the more recent Brainfeeder epoch and on into the future. Riggins says Liv.e inspired him to be "boundaryless and genreless," and The Pleasure Is Yours does seem to shake off easy designations, even as it feels like part of an obvious lineage of forward-thinking classicist R&B. Liv.e makes full use of that soundscape, cutting loose with casual excellence. Fans of Erykah Badu and Georgia Anne Muldrow need to tap in immediately.
