Iggy Pop has responded after one of his collaborative songs featured in the new Superman film.
This post may contain mild spoilers.
The latest instalment in the series of Superman movies arrived in cinemas last Friday (July 11) and is directed by James Gunn. It went on to shoot to the top of the box office charts and received warm reviews from critics, standing at 81 per cent on aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. That marks the highest of any Superman film except for the first two Christopher Reeve blockbusters, and it has already made over $125million at the box office.
At the end of the film, Iggy Pop’s 2006 collaboration with Teddybears, titled ‘Punkrocker’, is featured over the credits – leading to a new resurgence of interest in the song.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the punk rock veteran shared his joy at seeing the track featured in the movie.
“I always thought the track had soul,” he told the outlet, before adding: “Superman is the best friend you could have.”
It follows on from a few nods to the punk scene across film, too. In one part of the movie, the character Lois Lane, played by Rachel Brosnahan, discusses her love of the genre with Clark Kent (played by David Corenswet).
Kent tries to ‘prove’ that he is punk too, saying that he likes “the Strangle Fellows, the P.O.D.s, and the Mighty Crabjoys”, before being shot down by his romantic interest: “Those are pop radio bands, they’re not punk-rock. The Mighty Crabjoys suck.”
As highlighted by Stereogum, the fictional pop-punk band The Mighty Crabjoys have been referenced a few times across various DC films, and P.O.D comes as a tongue-in-cheek reference to one of James Gunn’s old bands.
Brosnahan has discussed her character’s admiration for punk in recent interviews around the film, too. On the red carpet, she said that her character would be a fan of Bikini Kill, and speaking to Collider, she said that she injected some of her own music taste into the character.

“Lois talks a little bit about being punk rock for a period of her life,” she said. “And I tend to find that people who end up having a punk rock phase arrive there with purpose — speaking as somebody who had a little bit of one myself.”
In other Superman news, Gunn discussed the surprise A-list cameo in the film, talking about how the casting came about as a “favour”. He also recalled the time he turned down directing Henry Cavill in Man Of Steel 2 back in 2018.
As for Iggy Pop, the punk veteran made a raucous appearance at Mad Cool festival last weekend, and broke out a set that NME described as “a barnstormer”.
“After getting off to a rocky start due to heat-related issues with the sound and lighting, the punk icon went on to prove why he has been one of the biggest names in the genre for nearly 50 years,” our description of his set read. Check out more highlights from that day here.
