Jeff Buckley Earns First Billboard Hot 100 Hit with “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over”

For the first time ever, Jeff Buckley has a hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Not bad for a guy who passed away almost 30 years ago.

Slated at No. 97 for the charts dated January, Buckley’s big achievement comes courtesy of “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over,” a bona fide deep cut from 1994’s iconic Grace. Per industry outfit Luminate, the song earned 3.8 million U.S. streams from January 16th to 22nd. Billboard reports that the song’s climb up the charts actually began back in April 2025, and the single eventually peaked at No. 12 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart later that summer. All of this activity has also pushed Grace up the Billboard 200 charts, peaking to the 156 position.

So, what’s the driving force behind the song’s success? You guessed it: TikTok, as the song’s been used by thousands of users to “soundtrack emotional and introspective videos.” Another factor is last year’s documentary It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, which saw director Amy Berg lovingly explore Buckley’s all-too-short life and triumphant career. (If you haven’t already, be sure to read our recent interview with Berg.) Turns out all the kids can’t get enough of that handsome devil’s docile tones.

It is, of course, not the first time Buckley has had both impressive and posthumous success. When American Idol contestant Jason Castro covered “Hallelujah” in 2008, the Buckley version topped the Digital Song Sales chart. Then, in November 2016, the death of Leonard Cohen (the original writer of “Hallelujah”) saw Buckley’s version leap back onto the Hot Rock & Alternative charts and land all the way at No. 10.
