John Fogerty Says It’s “Hilarious” Trump Still Misses the Irony of Playing “Fortunate Son” at His Rallies

John Fogerty already told Trump to cut the crap when he sent POTUS a cease and desist notice in 2020 over his campaign’s use of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son.” As recently as June’s birthday party military parade, however, Trump was still having the distinctly anti-war song played at his events. In a new interview with Vulture, Fogerty said politicians’ continued misreading of the classic track is “hilarious.”

Asked what he believes his most misunderstood song is, Fogerty said “Fortunate Son” is frequently misconstrued by “people who seem to be conservative, right-wing, and probably Republican or some other ‘ism’ in that category. And most notably by Mr. Trump.”

He continued, “It’s happened before where people thought it was a patriotic ditty to wave the flag and all that, not really understanding the cynicism and absolute defiance I had in the song. I mean, even if you don’t hear the rest of it, you should at least hear, ‘It ain’t me, I ain’t no fortunate son.’ But if you don’t, then I guess you’re able to see the song in a different way. How can I say this? I can’t imagine using that song as a political rallying theme, particularly when you seem to be the person who I’m screaming about in the song on all three counts. It’s hilarious to me.”

To Fogerty’s point, it is pretty funny that the self-appointed Chairman of the Kennedy Center seems incapable of understanding art. The classic rocker will give “Fortunate Son” a more fitting setting when he undoubtedly performs it on his upcoming tour supporting Legacy: the Creedence Clearwater Revival, a collection of re-recorded tracks from CCR’s catalog.
