The album was recorded live with a group of collaborators, including members of Wye Oak, Fust, Elephant Micah, and Beirut, with production by Andy Stack. It draws from traditional Appalachian material and features instrumentation including fiddle, banjo, electric guitar, pump organ, and drums.
Decosimo is based in Durham, North Carolina, and has previously contributed to projects by artists including Hiss Golden Messenger and Jake Xerxes Fussell. He has released two solo albums and is active in the performance and teaching of old-time music.
Alongside the announcement, Decosimo shared the album’s opening track, “Ida Red.” The arrangement references a version by Kentucky banjo player Morgan Sexton and includes contributions on electric guitar, organ, fiddle, and percussion.
Fiery Gizzard will be released on Philadelphia-based label Dear Life Records, whose catalogue also includes Florry, Fust, and MJ Lenderman.
