Drummer Josh Freese has given his first interview since being fired from Foo Fighters earlier this year, telling the New York Times that “it wasn’t music that I really resonated with.”
Freese, who has since rejoined Nine Inch Nails and is currently playing with the industrial band on its North American tour, discussed the pressure of taking over the Foos’ drum kit following the passing of the Taylor Hawkins.

“I’m coming in as Dave Grohl’s drummer, and the guy that’s supposed to save the day after the beloved Taylor Hawkins died,” said Freese, adding he felt “like I had to be firing on all cylinders all the time.”
Asked about essentially swapping places with Ilan Rubin, who left Nine Inch Nails to join Foo Fighters, Freese responded, “I couldn’t believe it. But Ilan’s a phenomenal drummer, a phenomenal musician. He’ll be perfect for the gig.”
As for another big drummer opening following Matt Cameron’s departure from Pearl Jam, Freese said he hasn’t been approached, but noted, “Whatever happens, I’m going to be out there playing. That’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.”
For now, fans can catch Freese on Nine Inch Nails’ aforementioned North American tour. The current outing runs through a September 19th show in Los Angeles, with tickets available here.
