The duo, who also perform as part of the synthesizer band S U R V I V E, have partnered with visual artist MFO (Marcel Weber) for the shows. The production uses light and sculpted fog, with lighting designed to take on physical presence through “dreamy glows and violent, haunted movements.” The aim is to blur the line between concert and cinema.
Dixon and Stein won an Emmy for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music for Stranger Things. Their score for the show has expanded in scale across the series’ five seasons. The duo work in the lineage of composers such as John Carpenter, using analogue synthesizers as their primary tools.
Before their work on Stranger Things, Dixon and Stein experimented with field recordings around Austin, Texas, hauling battery-powered modular setups to tunnels and water towers. They later formed S U R V I V E in 2009 alongside Mark Donica and Adam Jones, known for live performances that filled dive bars with a studio’s worth of synthesisers.
Outside the series, they have scored feature films including The Hole In The Fence and Retaliators, and have collaborated with multiple choirs, including a Bulgarian Women’s Choir, for their Meow Wolf score. They are also working on a new S U R V I V E album and worldwide touring.
Tour dates include London’s Roundhouse on 21 June, Belfast’s Waterfront Hall on 17 June, Birmingham Symphony Hall on 19 June, and Dublin’s 3Olympia Theatre on 21 September.
