The songs on Free and Equal Vol. 2 were originally performed by Carolina Cury at the London Coliseum in 2023 for a concert celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The compositions were curated with BBC Radio 3’s Elizabeth Alker, and recorded for piano by Carolina Cury and Konstantinos Damianakis at Studio Richter Mahr — which was founded by the musicians as a creative space for music, art, literature, and more. Today, they share “Seagull Chorale” by pianist and composer Sarah Nicolls as the first preview of the upcoming work.

All proceeds from Free and Equal Vol. 2 will be donated to Doctors Without Borders, an organisation which delivers emergency medical care to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from healthcare.

Discussing the album, Mahr explains: “Free & Equal Vol.2 has developed out of our residency programme where we give artists and musicians access to free studio space to develop work. Born from a belief that creativity matters, and that it needs support outside of commercial imperatives, this record is enthused with our ethos of egalitarianism. Our hope for a brighter future. A fairer and more humane future that allows us all to support each other.”

“All six of these artists are so incredibly talented and work with synthesisers and tape machines as well as traditional orchestral instruments and even very old instruments like recorders,” Alker adds. “So, I had no idea how their recordings would sound in new arrangements for solo piano and electronics. It's amazing to see what Carolina and Konstantinos have created: really moving, original, beautifully atmospheric, and perfectly balanced reworkings of the original compositions. It's given me new reasons to fall head-over-heels in love with this music all over again.”
