"Real Life" follows previous singles "Sad Clown", "Bored", and "HAHA", as the latest preview of Baker's debut collection of songs, which pull from grunge, glam, riot grrrl, and indie rock influences.
Speaking about the song, Baker says: “As a queer person, I’ve spent a lot of time imagining all the different life scenarios and possibilities of who I could be, who I should be, who I want to be and who I actually am. I’ve spent too much time pretending to be someone I’m not, playing out these different scenarios, playing pretend, trying to “fit in.” The song is about the control, or lack of control, we have within our own lives and realities.
"Do we make our own choices or are they made for us? “Is this real life, is this just fantasy?” Inspired by The Truman Show, am I living a life that I have created for myself? Or am I living a life that I have no choice but to go along with? Am I living by my own rules or am I following the script so neatly written for me, without even really knowing it? I think we’d all like to think we’re in control of our own realities, our own decisions, but I think it’s actually very hard to cut the puppet strings we are attached to.”
