Metallica and Apple have teamed up for a VR concert film available via Apple Vision Pro starting Friday (March 14th).
Simply titled “Metallica,” the immersive concert experience was filmed during Metallica’s final “M72 Tour” stop of 2024 in Mexico City and features full performances of “Whiplash,” “One,” and “Enter Sandman” — all shot in Apple Immersive Video.
The footage captures ultra-high-resolution 180-degree video and Spatial Audio to bring viewers vantage points as close up as the band’s “Snake Pit,” in addition to wide-angle views of the stage. This was achieved with the construction of a custom stage plot featuring 14 Apple Immersive Video cameras using a mix of stabilized cameras, cable-suspended cameras, and remote-controlled camera dolly systems that moved around the stage.
For those without an Apple Vision Pro, a standalone Spatial Audio EP entitled Metallica Live from Mexico City is also being released on March 14th via Apple Music. And anyone curious about the VR concert can head into their local Apple Store to demo an Apple Vision Pro, with future in-store headset demos now featuring a portion of the immersive concert experience (beginning on March 14th).
Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich discussed the immersive concert in an interview with Zane Lowe at SXSW on Tuesday (March 11th).
“It was just so cool, the filming part, but then the editing part — the first few times having the headset on and being able to do that [moves head around] and see and also hear the [spatial] audio,” Ulrich said. “It’s just fucking crazy.”
Fans can also check out Metallica with their own eyes and ears when the thrash legends launch a new North American leg of their “M72 World Tour” in April. Get tickets here.
