Mitski Unleashes Her Inner Cabaret Singer with “I’ll Change for You” on Colbert: Watch

Mitski stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to perform a dazzling rendition of “I’ll Change for You,” a song from her forthcoming album Nothing’s About to Happen to Me.

“I’ll Change for You” finds Mitski at her most vulnerable, offering to erase any part of herself that her partner might not want in exchange for their love. She channels these big feelings with a decidedly small arrangement, her backing band providing jazzy flourishes and drummer Bruno Esrubilsky employing a tightly-wound bossa nova groove.

They all create space for Mitski to ache and ruminate, and she eventually reaches a passionate, cards-on-the-table belt at the start of the final chorus. Mitski has often leaned into theatricality for her live performances, but this is about as close to “Mitski as cabaret singer” as we can get. Watch the performance below.

Mitski’s new album Nothing’s About to Happen to Me arrives on Friday. February 27th via Dead Oceans. In addition to revealing “I’ll Change for You,” she also offered lead single “Where’s My Phone?” when announcing the project. She’ll support the new album with a series of brief residencies around the world; she’ll begin in New Jersey on February 28th and will continue with shows in New York, Mexico City, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, London, Sydney, and more.
