My Chemical Romance and John Cameron Mitchell to collab on new theatre production

3 days ago 6

During a recent appearance on the Only Child podcast hosted by Bob the Drag Queen, the Oh, Mary! actor disclosed that the iconic rock band and he are collaborating on something designed for the stage. “There’s a project for theatre in the works,” Mitchell teased. “It’s still a secret, nothing’s been officially announced. That’s all I can say for now. There are papers to sign, but honestly, they’re wonderful people.”

Despite the confirmation that a collaboration exists, there's no further details from Mitchell - however, the news has sparked a flurry of theories online. Fans on Reddit and TikTok are already speculating that the partnership could yield an immersive theatre piece centred on My Chemical Romance’s beloved 2006 record The Black Parade. Drawing comparisons to the large-scale, interactive productions pioneered by companies like Punchdrunk, TikTok creator Sweaty Oracle – known for spilling a lot of Broadway tea – believes that, "It's going to be performed like an immersive Sleep No More musical.... like Masquerade, Andrew Lloyd-webber's immersive production of Phantom of the Opera."

Mitchell’s background in boundary-pushing performance art could be a perfect match for bringing the album’s narrative world to life in an unconventional, participatory setting. Celebrated for his work as a Tony and Obie Award-winning writer, director, and performer, Mitchell also created the cult classic Hedwig and the Angry Inch alongside composer Stephen Trask in 1998. Currently, he’s on stage in the hit comedy Oh, Mary!, where he portrays Mary Todd Lincoln.
