Nicolas Cage stars as a dad going through holy hell in the first teaser trailer for The Carpenter’s Son, a new horror film directed by Lofty Nathan and co-starring FKA twigs as Mother Mary.
Based on the Infancy Gospel of Thomas — which is not official canon, in the original sense of that word — The Carpenter’s Son will focus on Jesus’ adolescence, as portrayed by Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place). In this apocryphal gospel, Jesus is a pretty normal boy with sweet moods and temper tantrums — although unlike most kids his age, the tantrums arrive with supernatural vengeance. For a few years there, Jesus goes around smiting other children and blinding the parents who dare to complain that their kid is dead. Sounds rough, but I’m pretty sure my kids would do the same if I couldn’t put them in timeout.
According to the official description, the movie “tells the dark story of a family hiding out in Roman Egypt. The son, known only as The Boy, is driven to doubt by another mysterious child and rebels against his guardian, The Carpenter, revealing inherent powers and a fate beyond his comprehension. As he exercises his own power, The Boy and his family become the target of horrors, natural and divine.”
No release date has been set, but the film is expected in 2025. The teaser trailer is all mood and no plot, so it’s unclear how much smiting Jupe’s Jesus will do. You can watch it below.
Cage has a Bible’s worth of scripts to read, with upcoming projects including a Spider-Man Noir series, a biopic in which he plays football lifer John Madden, and he’s also in talks to star in Season 5 of True Detective.
As for the artist formerly known as twigs, her album Eusexua is one of our absolute favorites of 2025, and she’s been tapped to star in an upcoming biopic of Josephine Baker. Last month, she and ex Shia LaBeouf reached a settlement on her sexual abuse lawsuit.
