Primus’ Les Claypool Announces Frizzle Fry Graphic Novel

Primus frontman Les Claypool has announced a graphic novel titled Frizzle Fry: Phantoms of Barrington Hall, arriving October 10th via Z2 Comics.

Beyond the album and song of the same name, this “illustrated storybook for adults” presents a tale “allegedly” based on Primus’ experiences during their early years playing shows in Berkeley and particularly Claypool’s recollections of Barrington Hall, a student housing co-op that was influential to the Berkeley/East Bay underground scene.

The graphic novel (see images below) was penned by Les and illustrated by Cage Claypool and Abimael Hernandez.

“The thing about Barrington is… I’ve said this many times throughout the years and I’ve written a couple of songs about it… Barrington was like a living entity,” commented Les Claypool on the origins of the story. “It was like a living being. You walked in and you could feel it. That’s why I tried to really emphasize the notion of this place having a pulse because it felt like a living entity.”

Z2 editor-in-chief Rantz A. Hoseley described the experience of working on Frizzle Fry as being, “A logical extension of an ill-advised youth spent tripping balls in the mural-covered walls of my art school’s dormitory.”

He added: “As a longtime fan of Primus and someone who considers Frizzle Fry to be one of the greatest albums of all time, getting to help bring Les’ vision to life on the page was a pleasure and a constant source of unexpected delight.”

Z2 is rolling various editions of the comic, including a standard edition and a slipcased deluxe edition. A Platinum edition limited to 500 copies will also be available, housing a book bound with Les’ signature, a green vinyl variant of Primus’ Frizzle Fry LP, three art prints, and three trading cards. Pre-orders are available via Z2 Comics.

The release adds to a big year for Claypool, who is embarking on a triple-duty tour with Primus, Claypool Lennon Delirium, and Frog Brigade this summer. Dates kick off in June, and you can get tickets here.
