“Begging for Change” follows previous singles “Opening Night” by Arctic Monkeys, “Flags” by Damon Albarn, Grian Chatten and Kae Tempest, and “Let’s Do It Again!” by The Last Dinner Party.
For the track, singer Jarvis Cocker invited the same children’s choir featured on “Flags” to add screams, and recruited a star-studded ensemble for backing vocals including Damon Albarn, Grian Chatten, Kae Tempest, and Carl Barat.
Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, with James Ford and Animesh Raval on production and mixing, “Begging for Change” is regarded as Pulp’s most stripped-back and unapologetic.
In 1996, when their fifth album Different Class won a Mercury Prize after being nominated alongside the original HELP album, Cocker dedicated the win to War Child and donated the £25,000 prize money to the charity.
Speaking on Pulp’s contributions to War Child, Cocker says: “Thirty years ago we gave our Mercury Prize (and the prize money) to War Child. This year we have given more. How much more? You’ll have to wait and see..”
The HELP(2) album is a collaborative release inspired by the 1995 landmark release HELP, which was made to engage audiences in the work that War Child does to deliver immediate aid, education, specialist mental health support, and protection to children affected by conflict around the world.
HELP(2) features contributions from Arctic Monkeys, Anna Calvi, Arlo Parks, Arooj Aftab, Bat For Lashes, Beabadoobee, Beck, Beth Gibbons, Big Thief, Black Country, New Road, Cameron Winter, Damon Albarn, Depeche Mode, Dove Ellis, Ellie Rowsell, English Teacher, Ezra Collective, Foals, Fontaines D.C., Graham Coxon, Greentea Peng, Grian Chatten, Kae Tempest, King Krule, Nilüfer Yanya, Olivia Rodrigo, Pulp, Sampha, The Last Dinner Party, Wet Leg and Young Fathers.
