Quiet Light – “Hi, Society” (Ms* Gloom Cover)

Quiet Light's Blue Angel Sparkling Silver 2 is easily one of this year's best albums, even if it was promoted as a mixtape. Today the performer known as Riya Mahesh has shined her hushed glow on another artist's track from last year. LA alt-pop singer Ms* Gloom's original recording of "Hi, Society" is a crystalline, beat-driven electro-pop track that reminds me of early Purity Ring. Mahesh has pared it down to a soft, sparse ballad. The chorus is giving "New Americana" if you ask me: "I don't smoke marijuana/ Drop the bass, Harry Potter/ Kurt Cobain, Nirvana/ Bless the shrimp, tap water." Hear both versions below.
