“I wanted to take inspiration from 80s dance music and add modern elements to create something fresh”, Roberts tells BEST FIT. The sounds of great pop bands like Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode are obvious. In the fullness of the bass, and the sweeping synths that usher in Roberts’ gliding vocals, singing the delicate opening lines, “I’d do anything I can to feel it / I’m forever waiting on the ceiling.”
The creation of “I’d Do Anything” was a quick process according to Roberts: “We made the synth part first and then I vibed with the lyrics. That’s normally how I write my songs, music first and then vocal melody, followed by lyrics.” But the roots of the song and the story of the lyrics go further back. “I wrote it whilst I was at university and had struggled with some personal boy drama. It was a hard situation for me at the time but I’m glad that I could turn it into a song!”
There is a vulnerability expressed in the lyrics: “I used to get this feeling in my gut that you were seeing someone new, me too / Now I'm the one who messed it up for nothing / I've got nothing left to lose, but you.” Despite the regret and yearning for things to be back as they once were, the sound of the bass, synths, and the guitar licks that support the melody, continue to drive the song forward with love and positivity.
Roberts co-wrote the track with Mary Weitz whilst she was on a brief visit to London. “The demo was created in a one-day studio session,” says Roberts. “I came in with an initial idea and we created a song around it. Saam Jafarzadeh, the producer, made a great initial instrumental vibe and we wrote heartfelt lyrics over it that wrote themselves with ease.” There is a free and relaxing energy that runs through the track, the chorus soars but the verses keep rolling on. The quick speed in which the demo makes a lot of sense, none of the energy of that session seems to have been lost in the final mix.
“I’d Do Anything” was informed by the overall tone of 2010s music, songs like “Everything Is Embarrassing” by Sky Ferreira, and early Lorde. “‘Losing You’” by Solange has a super cool drum and synth vibe that also inspired me,” Roberts shares. “This era is super nostalgic to me as it reminds me of my early teen years, and I feel there’s not enough music being made like this anymore.”
Playlists, parties and walks in the sun can be soundtracked by the great, upbeat pop-tinged nostalgia of “I’d Do Anything” and there is more to come soon from Roberts. When asked about future releases her reply is an exciting one: “Yes! I have lots more songs lined up! All of my songs are quite different from each other, as I am a fan of all different kinds of genres and I like to combine them together. I have a couple of 80s inspired tunes up my sleeve but you’ll have to wait and see!”
Roberts has already gained a large following on streaming platforms, social media and through live shows across the UK and Europe but “I’d Do Anything” feels like a statement single from an artist making fun, playful and joyous music: “I could imagine solo listening in headphones while commuting or walking. It’s a personal song, so people might listen to it by themselves whilst looking out a train window and yearning, or maybe in the gym working out. Also, given the uptempo drums, it could definitely be a song to dance or party to with friends!”
