Today, everyone’s favorite animated post-Britpop act, Gorillaz, released their new album, The Mountain. (We even hear whispers that you can read a whole cover story about it.) To accompany the record, the Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett-led project also unveiled a stunningly animated short film. Watch it below.
The eight-minute visual spectacle, directed by Hewlett, follows Murdoc Niccals, Russel Hobbs, 2D and Noodle taking a psychedelic journey through India. The whole thing is soundtracked by The Mountain cuts “The Mountain,” “The Moon Cave,” and “The Sad God.” Just like the record, it’s ambitious, existential, and wildly creative.
Additional direction and animation for the short film also came by way of Max Taylor and Tim McCourt of BAFTA-nominated London-based animation studio THE LINE. The creative team aimed to “reinterpret Gorillaz through the timeless aesthetic of 1960s animated features,” according to the press release. See the final result for yourself below.
In support of The Mountain, Gorillaz performed a joyous set at the Hollywood Palladium; Check out our recap and see photos from the set here. Looking ahead to the spring, the band also has quite a few tour dates throughout Europe (get tickets here). They’re also set to make appearances at festivals like Primavera Sound and Shaky Knees, with the latter notably being the sole North American Gorillaz concert on the horizon. Plus, they’ll make their long-awaited SNL debut on March 7th.
