Sublime are back with a brand new single, “Ensenada,” which marks their first truly original studio recording with frontman Jakob Nowell. Listen below.
“Ensenada” also serves as the first song from the band’s upcoming studio album, their first since 1996’s self-titled LP. “Ensenada and the new music we’re working on is inspired by old Sublime material,” Jakob said in a statement. “You can’t match something from that 90s era – it was such a moment in time. This feels like an epilogue, a thank you to all of the fans and everyone who’s supported Sublime. Our goal with ‘Ensenada’ was not to replicate anything, but from my perspective its more like a tribute to my uncles Bud and Eric and the inspiration they give me. It’s organic and we have a good time. We did a bunch of jams, dove into the old catalog, and the more it felt like fun—throwing it all together and seeing what sticks—the more we knew that was the right move. Creating genuine music that reflects your life and times… people tap into that, and then you look around and realize, wow, look at all the love we’ve found.”
The new track follows “Feel Like That,” a collaborative release with Stick Figure, featuring vocals from both Jakob and his late father and Sublime’s original singer, Bradley Nowell. Along with Jakob Nowell, Sublime’s current lineup consists of original members Eric Wilson (bass) and Bud Gaugh (drums).
Back in March of this year, Sublime announced that they were working on a new studio project, and had been writing songs with blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and producer John Feldmann.
“Travis is an old-school fan and scholar of the Sublime catalog,” Nowell explained. “They feel like family members now too, man. There was that feeling from everyone that what we’re doing here is something generational and special on an emotional, spiritual, familial level.”
Sublime have several upcoming festival appearances on the schedule, including Vans Warped Tour in Long Beach, CA; Sea.Hear.Now in Asbury Park, NJ; and Shaky Knees in Atlanta, GA. Additionally, they’ll stage a four-day takeover at Park MGM Las Vegas between August 14th and 17th. Tickets are available here.
Recently, Sublime’s Bud Gaugh appeared on The Story Behind the Song to share the origins of the band’s classic song “Wrong Way.” Listen here.
