Precreation Percolation will feature an expansive collection of rarities, including their out-of-print Ankst EPs, which will be brought back to vinyl for the first time in three decades, and previously unreleased tracks featuring Ifans on vocals.
“Pocket Sam” was recorded at Cardiff's Grassroots Studio in 1993 during the band’s formative period, and joins two further unheard Ifans recordings – “AK Serenade” and “Choking On Your Lust” – on the collection’s bonus disc.
The vinyl edition of Precreation Percolation compiles the band’s two EPs for legendary Welsh indie label Ankst – 1995’s Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyndrobwllantysiliogogogochynygofod (In Space), which holds the record for longest ever EP title, and Moog Droog.
Ifans left the band in 1994 as his acting career took off, replaced by Gruff Rhys as the classic line-up solidified following the arrival of Dafydd Ieuan, Huw Bunford, Guto Pryce and Cian Ciarán. Ieuan departed Catatonia on the eve of their Warner Brothers deal to join. “Don’t worry,” he told Rhys in early 1995, “we’ll be signed by Christmas.” By summer, they had joined Oasis and Primal Scream at Creation.
“The two-year ‘Precreation Percolation’ was over and, for better or for worse, our lives would never be the same again,” says Rhys. “The music featured here features some of the residue of that foundational period.”
Commemorating those years, the compilation comprises 22-tracks plus a 31-track bonus disc that compiles material made prior to the band’s 1995 signing to Creation Records, alongside 2026 Redux mixes of abandoned demo sessions. Included is “Of No Fixed Identity”, which the Furries released as a Bandcamp fundraiser for the Save The Severn Estuary campaign in 2022.
It arrives as the band prepare for their first live shows since 2016. Their nine-date Supacabra UK and Ireland tour sold out immediately upon announcement late last year, prompting the addition of eight summer festival appearances, including stops at Bristol Sounds, End of the Road and Dublin's Wider Than Pictures.
