Taika Waititi is probably screaming, “I AM THE LAW” right about now, as he’s set to direct a new live-action adaptation of Judge Dredd.
The Hollywood Reporter has it that the Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit filmmaker will bring the popular British comic creation back to the screen. Drew Pearce (Fall Guy, Mission: Impossible — Rouge Nation) is writing the script. Reports say the pitch hews closely to the original comics, and will be a “fun sci-fi blockbusters that nonetheless speaks to this moment in culture.”
The character has twice been adapted, once as a 1995 bid-budget flop starring Sylvester Stallone, and again as the much better received, smaller-budgeted Dredd in 2012 starring Karl Urban with a script by Alex Garland. This time around, producers are hoping to create a franchise that would be followed up by more movies and shows “across various platforms.”
